Who local SEO is for
Local SEO suits any business whose customers are within driving distance. In Northampton that means trades working across Duston, Kingsthorpe, Weston Favell and Wootton; clinics and dentists near the town centre; solicitors, accountants and independent financial advisers; cafes and shops around the Market Square; and service firms that cover the villages out towards Moulton, Brixworth and Bugbrooke.
It also suits businesses based elsewhere in the county that want to be found by Northampton searchers, such as a Wellingborough kitchen fitter or a Daventry removals firm. The rules are slightly different when you are not physically in the town, and we explain those honestly at the start.
How local results work
Google shows two kinds of local result: the map pack (usually three businesses with a map) and the ordinary organic listings below it. The map pack is driven mostly by three things Google itself names: relevance (does your profile and website match the search?), distance (how close are you to the searcher?) and prominence (how well known and trusted are you, judged by reviews, links, citations and mentions).
You cannot change where you are based, so local SEO concentrates on relevance and prominence, and on making sure Google has accurate information about where you work.
| Factor | What it means | What we work on |
|---|---|---|
| Relevance | How well you match the search | Profile categories, services, website pages, content |
| Distance | How close you are to the searcher | Accurate address or service area, location pages |
| Prominence | How trusted and well known you are | Reviews, citations, local links, press mentions |
What is included, step by step
1Audit. We review your Google Business Profile, search for duplicates, check how you rank across different parts of town with a grid-based rank check, and compare you with the businesses that currently appear above you.
2Google Business Profile optimisation. Primary and secondary categories, services, description, attributes, opening hours, photos and booking or enquiry links. See our dedicated Google Business Profile service for the detail.
3Citation cleanup. We check the main UK directories and data sources, including Bing Places, Apple Business Connect, Yell, Thomson Local, Yelp and relevant trade directories, and correct old addresses, phone numbers and business names. Inconsistent data is common after a move or rebrand.
4Website pages. A page for each core service, and properly researched location pages for the areas you serve most. These are written by people, not generated by swapping town names. Our SEO content writing service covers the approach.
5On-page and technical basics. Title tags, headings, LocalBusiness structured data, internal links, page speed on mobile and a clear contact route. If deeper issues turn up, we bring in technical SEO.
6Reviews routine. A simple, honest process for asking every happy customer for a review, and replying to every review you receive. We never write, buy or filter reviews.
7Local links and mentions. Sponsorships, local business groups, suppliers, partners and community involvement that earn genuine local links.
8Monthly reporting. Rankings across the area, Business Profile actions, enquiries and what we will do next.
How long it takes
Profile fixes and citation cleanup are usually done within the first month, and many businesses see more calls and direction requests within six to eight weeks. Competitive searches such as "solicitor Northampton" or "emergency plumber Northampton" take longer, often four to nine months of steady work, because you are competing with firms that have years of reviews and links.
What drives the cost
We price local SEO by the amount of work involved, not by a fixed package. The main drivers are:
- How many services and locations you need to rank for
- How competitive those searches are in Northampton
- The state of your current profile, citations and website
- Whether we write the content or you supply it
- Whether you have one location or several, each needing its own profile
A single-location trade with a sound website needs far less work than a multi-site clinic group. We give you a fixed monthly figure after the audit, with the work it covers written down.
Common mistakes we see
- Listing a service area that covers half the Midlands, which does not help you rank further away
- Keyword-stuffing the business name, which risks suspension
- Twenty near-identical town pages with only the place name changed
- Asking for reviews in a burst, then forgetting for a year
- Using a virtual office address the business does not actually operate from
- Never checking the Q&A section, where the public can post answers
Our article on Google Business Profile mistakes in Northamptonshire goes into more of these.
How we measure success
We track the things that bring work through the door: calls, form submissions, booking requests and direction requests from your profile. Alongside them we track local rankings on a grid across the town, so you can see whether you are visible in Duston as well as in the town centre. Every report explains what changed and why.
Beyond Northampton
If you serve the wider county, we build out your visibility town by town. Our Wellingborough page explains how search behaviour differs just ten miles away. For a practical starting point you can work through yourself, read our local SEO checklist for Northampton trades.
Frequently asked questions
How long does local SEO take to work in Northampton?
Profile and citation fixes often show results within six to eight weeks. Competitive searches usually take four to nine months of consistent work.
Do I need a physical office to appear in the map pack?
You need a real address where you operate, but service-area businesses such as trades can hide it and list the areas they serve instead. Virtual offices are not eligible.
Can you guarantee a top three map pack position?
No. Nobody can guarantee rankings. We can tell you what is realistic for your market and show you the progress each month.
Will you write fake reviews?
Never. We help you set up a routine for asking real customers and replying to every review.
Do I need location pages for every village?
No. Start with the few areas that bring the most work and make those pages genuinely useful. Thin pages for every village can do more harm than good.
